The Job

In the role of Back-End Developer, you will work within the development team on the production and development of back-end code and integration with the front-end development team. You will be responsible for providing strategy and solutions in collobaration with our UX and creative teams to best satisfy client requirements. Your work will follow industry best practices and coding standards developed by The Agency. You will strive to test, refactor and optimize all code to achieve the best performance for the final product. 

In the initial strategy and planning phase, you will be responsible for obtaining an appropriate level of understanding of scope, project goals, and requirements, and use your experience to provide input towards practical solutions and development-time estimation.

While the creative team generally leads concepting, we look to all individuals within our agency to participate in creative sessions, bringing together the diversity in backgrounds and expertise and allowing The Agency to continually innovate. You will play a role in the planning of web applications and campaigns, including websites, mobile apps & sites, as well as microsites. You will frequently work with the creative team to determine innovations in the user experience and feasibility of concepts as they relate to technology, budget, scope, and schedule. Together with the creative and user experience teams you may work on researching, prototyping and iterating to prove a concept.

Within the production phase, you will formulate solutions, both independently and within a team utilizing your personal knowledge and finding solutions where necessary. In all cases, you will stay in communication with the Project Manager, ensuring both your workload and progress is clear.

In delivering a final solution, you will make every effort to balance innovation with time and budget restrictions. Detailed development should be your goal; you will need to prioritize your workload based on the time allotted for development. In addition, you will be responsible for Quality Assurance review of your work and will aim to deliver a bug free, optimized and flawless product in every instance.

Technical Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in web development with backend technologies (LAMP - primarily PHP, Linux, Apache, MySQL)
  • Expert with object oriented programming and MVC design pattern
  • Experience developing custom CMS solutions and web applications
  • Strong working knowledge of open source frameworks (e.g - CakePHP, Laravel, CodeIgniter etc)
  • Strong working knowledge of implementing and maintaining 3rd party content management systems (e.g - Drupal, Wordpress, SilverStripe, ExpressionEngine etc)
  • Experience using one or more API's; especially Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, YouTube or Facebook
  • Familiarity with OAuth or other web app authentication
  • Advanced knowledge of MySQL databases, scalable, high-performance, open source NoSQL databases
  • Experience with Linux, Apache, server set-up and management
  • Experience with server side caching mechanisms and optimization (e.g - APC, memcached)
  • Experience with web and server security (e.g - ssl, xss, sql injection)
  • Experience with cloud computing services (Amazon, Rackspace)
  • Experience with Git and Subversion
  • Proven experience in troubleshooting and solving complex problems
  • BS degree in computer science or equivalent experience

Additonal Skills

  • Strong web application documentation, design, coding and testing experience
  • Proven analytical ability to create/modify application code to support new functionality
  • Strong debugging experience with code written by other developers
  • Proven ability to provide effort and elapsed time estimates for assigned work
  • Knowledge of Mobile Web and HTML5
  • Knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, HTML, JQuery and AJAX technologies
  • Experience working in an agile development workflow
  • Additional programming experience (.net, java, python)

General Requirements

  • Candidates should be residents of Greater Vancouver or willing to relocate. International candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Minimum 5+ years experience developing for the web with at least 2+ years of agency experience
  • Only those with a solid online portfolio of real client work will be considered
  • Solid communication skills; ability to listen, present, and sell through ideas both internally and directly to executive level client stakeholders
  • Finally, candidates should be focused with a positive outlook, contributing towards an agency culture that ensures a positive experience for the whole team
